Periodontal disease is an infection that affects the tissues and bone that surround and support the tooth. As the disease progresses, a pocket develops that will lead to bone loss and eventually tooth loss. The enlarged pockets are havens for harmful bacteria and make it extremely difficult to practice effective oral hygiene.
Periodontal disease is caused when specific bacteria in dental plaque produce toxic substances and enzymes that irritate the gum tissue and cause inflammation around the tooth. This will damage the attachment of the bone and gum tissue to the tooth root.
Smoking, diabetes, medications, ill-fitting bridges, oral contraceptives, heredity and poor oral hygiene all play a role in the progression of this dental disease. It has also been shown in studies that periodontal disease can be passed from parents to children and between couples.
In our office, we provide a full range of periodontal services including hygiene, surgery, and the diagnosis and treatment of this disease. The focus is on prevention, as this is the most effective way to minimize the effects of periodontal disease.
