It is vital to get your children off to a healthy start in their dental
lives. The "baby" or primary teeth are important in the development of
the face, learning to speak, as well as eating and chewing foods and
keeping an attractive smile. The general health of your child can
be compromised if the primary teeth are not cared for properly. Tooth
decay in primary teeth can also affect the eruption and development of
the permanent teeth. Premature loss of baby teeth can cause facial
deformities and permanent teeth to erupt in poor position.
We recommend young children visit our office as early as
possible. Having the young child come with the parent or older
sibling will allow the child to observe and learn how positive a
hygiene visit can be. Our goal is to create an environment where a
positive, caring, nurturing relationship can develop between Dr. Bohrod,
his staff and our young patients. At this visit, we will do a
comprehensive examination that evaluates the child for tooth decay,
tooth positioning problems, and any other head and neck issues. Our
hygienist will spend time teaching our young patients proper brushing
technique, healthy foods, and providing a sound basis for future
prevention. Fluoride will be provided to aid in preventing decay.
When indicated, X-rays will be used to help diagnose and plan care. At
this visit, any orthodontic issues can be discussed and referred for
treatment to our orthodontist.
Tips for making the first visit fun:
* Try to create the atmosphere of a fun outing.
* Schedule an office interview to allow the child to get acquainted.
* Bring the child with you on your visit and be a good role model.
Things to avoid:
* Don't use the dental visit as a threat or punishment for not brushing
or poor diet.
* Don't let the child sense any anxieties the parent may have regarding
dental care.
* Don't bribe your child with presents or gifts.
* Don't let anyone scare your child with "dental horror stories".
Our goal in treating young children is to establish a trusting
relationship that will allow for the development of good preventive
habits and a healthy smile
